As part of their Pirlirrpa Education Program, St James College recently held a Pirlirrpa Open Day & Volunteer Expo on the 8th August 2017.
The stalls were run by students enrolled at Pirlirrpa (St James College) currently undertaking a CHC24015 Certificate II in Active Volunteering through Volunteering Queensland's Students As Active Volunteers Initiative (SAAVI). All the students involved spent their time volunteering at the RSPCA and gained invaluable experience working alongside other volunteers and learning about the different roles available.
Ms Jackie Choquenot, SAAVI Coordinator from Volunteering Queensland was present at the Expo and was impressed by how open and engaging the students were. They shared their experiences through volunteering and what they have gained through completing the Certificate II in Active Volunteering.
Volunteer student Arnikah decided to showcase the Australia Zoo Volunteer Program at her stall by creating a great powerpoint presentation. This included information on the areas at the zoo where you can volunteer and also answered many frequently asked questions. Arnikah is going to continue volunteering in the future and plans to go onto university to study criminology and criminal justice.
Another student, Liam chose to promote the charity ‘Help me with it’. He created a presentation that provided details about the organisation, how to get involved and how their Seeker and Helper system works. Jackie chatted with Liam about his volunteering experience and he was very proactive in even designing his own flyer for the event. Liam is also currently studying a Certificate III in Web Design.
Ashleigh chose Radio Lollipop as her charity to feature.
Overall, it was a great day! It was evident that the students were extremely proud of their work and what they had achieved through their volunteering experience.
