'Leave no woman behind'

International Women’s Day is globally recognised to celebrate the amazing acts of courage and determination by ordinary women in their country and communities. The 2018 theme is ‘Leave no woman behind’ acknowledges the essential role women play in humanitarian and natural disaster response.

Women and girls are 14 times more likely to die or be injured in the wake of a natural disaster. By educating and empowering women as planners and leaders to respond to disasters and conflict, we can help women and girls survive and overcome the many challenges they face in their everyday lives.

Whilst a lot of progress has been made, there is still a long road ahead before we can achieve gender equality, empower all women and girls with equal opportunities, education, end discrimination, exploitation and all forms of violence.

By attending an International Women’s Day (IWD) event or supporting your local charity, you can support the UN Women’s work to improve and transform the lives of women and girls globally.

“On International Women’s Day, let us all pledge to do everything we can to overcome entrenched prejudice, support engagement and activism and promote gender equality and women’s empowerment”. – UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres
