2020 Supplementary Volunteer Grants



Volunteering Queensland, on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Social Services, is pleased to award the 2020 Supplementary Volunteer Grants to volunteer involving organisations across Queensland to support the efforts of volunteers in building stronger, more resilient communities.

The 2020 Supplementary Volunteer Grants are funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

The grants of between $1,000 to $5,000 can be used by volunteer involving organisations and community groups to support the efforts of their volunteers and encourage and increase participation in volunteering.

Funding can assist organisations to transition their volunteer programs back into operation following the disruption caused by COVID-19, with grants to help re-engage volunteers and adapt practices to support volunteers’ safety as the economy reopens.


Grants outcome

All applications:

  • 1,086 applications were received
  • $4,172,308 in funding applied for with a total budget of $497,250 available.

Funded applications:

  • 144 applications by 144 individual organisations were awarded funding
  • 99.6% of workforce are volunteers for the funded organisations
  • The majority of organisations who were funded are from regional and rural areas
  • Youth, community services, sport, recreation, education and Indigenous services (respectively) where the primary organisations funded
  • The most popular items to apply for were small equipment, training, adapting practices (as a result of COVID-19) and re-engagement activities (as a result of COVID-19)
  • $4,172,308 in funding applied for with a total budget of $497,250 available.


The Australian Government has provided Volunteering Queensland with funding to administer a Supplementary Volunteer Grants program to volunteer involving organisations. 

The purpose of the funding is to support the efforts of Queensland’s volunteers as well as to encourage and increase participation in volunteering by on-funding grants to provide small amounts of money that organisations and community groups can use to help their volunteers. 

The Supplementary Volunteer Grants are designed to support volunteer involving organisations with a high proportion (over 40%) of volunteers to: 

  • Help support the efforts of Australia’s volunteers; 
  • Help support the inclusion of vulnerable people through volunteering; 
  • Encourage, support and increase participation in volunteering; 
  • Post COVID-19 re-engagement activities for volunteers; and 
  • Adapting practices to support volunteers safety in relation to COVID-19.

The intended outcome of the grants is to strengthen community functioning by increasing participation in volunteering.
