About this opportunity

Join the Bribie Island Butterfly House Family!

If you like working with nature you are going to love the Bribie Island Butterfly House!

You have the opportunity to write and compile the Bribie Island Butterfly House newsletter!

This is currently a bi-monthly newsletter, with Stop Press articles now and then. You will get ideas for stories by visiting the Butterfly House regularly (monthly) to pick up the vibe, catch up on happenings and take photos.

Living reasonably locally is required.

Experience is helpful. Some training provided.

In the 18 months since we opened on beautiful Bribie Island, over 25,000 people have enjoyed visiting our beautiful butterflies and learning about the amazing butterfly cycle and ‘metamorphosis’!

We’ve hosted everyone from babes in prams to our wheelie-walker senior citizens, from day care centres, vacation care and school groups, to families of the incurably ill and folk with disabilities, plus coach loads of members from clubs such as Probus, Rotary, craft groups, scouts, retirement villages, church groups, deaf folk, camera clubs and so many more.

It appears that everyone loves butterflies! They certainly are a wonderful creation. Our attractive gardens, soft music and water features add to the ambience.

The bonus is that 100% of our surplus goes to help less fortunate people, as we are 100% run by volunteers. Come along and you can join the Bribie Island Butterfly House family. We hope to see you soon!

What is it like working at the Bribie Island Butterfly House?

We believe that Many hands make light work! Therefore we try to have multiple workers for each position plus extras for backup. We have quite a range of activities! There is something to suit just about everybody!

If you like working outdoors you can help us by cultivating butterfly plants in the Butterfly House and in the garden. Or you can contribute by maintaining our mechanical operations. We also need Butterfly Food Collectors, Social Media practitioners and ‘Flight Attendants’, who conduct our tours of the Butterfly House!

Working inside we have over 15 Laboratory Technicians and we still need five more! We also need a Cleaner and Nursery Propagation Gardener.

Working from home we need a Facebook Content Contributor, Website Support and Newsletter Coordinator!

What will you get working at the Bribie Island Butterfly House? Most of our positions do not require previous experience because we provide training in how to handle butterflies and their requirements. We believe volunteers need:

  • Someone to report to who knows the job
  • People to work with
  • People to ask for help
  • Clear guidelines for your scope of work and decisions
  • Agreed upon goals to achieve
  • Recognition!

But most importantly we offer all our volunteers a place in the Bribie Island Butterfly House family!

Current positions required:

  • Laboratory Technicians
  • Gardeners
  • Nursery Propagation Gardeners
  • Maintenance Operators
  • Cleaners
  • Tour Guides
  • Newsletter Coordinators

Additional requirements

Please read the following before applying.

If you are selected as a volunteer (assistant), there will be a two month training and probation period. This will give you time to understand the skills and requirements of your position. It will also help the 'Bribie Butterfly Volunteers' assess your suitably for a position as a valued assistant in this humanitarian and environmental cause.

Because we are dealing with the life and health of the beautiful butterfly insect, it is extremely important that we work harmoniously together as volunteers, with utmost care and kindness, and moderate talking during each working shift so all assistants can practice concentration on the task in hand. Lack of concentration on our tasks can cause stress, physical damage, sickness, disease and even death to the insects. Our volunteer assistants take pride in being industrious in their work and agree to practice a high degree of concentration during their allocated work shift.

By submitting an application you agree to abide by the above requirements. Thank you very much for your desire to assist with this great humanitarian and environmental project.

Time required

Time required is flexible. The Newsletter Journalist must take responsibility for compiling the newsletter, currently each quarter, although the frequency could increase to monthly. Some stories will be provided by others and some will be written by the Journalist.
