Background: The Pristine Peninsula Community Group started in July 2018, with the Mission to make Redcliffe Peninsula the cleanest community in Australia. Our 6 R’s Strategy is RETHINK what you buy, REFUSE single use packaging, REDUCE your waste, REUSE because you can, REPAIR what you can and RECYCLE everything you can. The Repair Café Redcliffe Peninsula, under The Pristine Peninsula Community Group and set up through an auspice agreement with the Redcliffe Encircle Neighbourhood Centre, is a part of this philosophy- to help the community give items another life by stopping them going to landfill. There are over 1,500 Repair Cafés worldwide, with around 6 in South-east Queensland and the closest one at Sandgate (started in late 2019). Repair Cafés are free meeting places and they are all about repairing things (together). Tools and materials are supplied by Repairers, to help the people bringing items to repair the items, so the repairees are learning. Items typically repaired are clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, toys etc. You’ll also find expert volunteers, with repair skills in all kinds of fields. Visitors bring their broken items from home. Together with the specialists they start making their repairs in the Repair Café. It’s an ongoing learning process. If they have nothing to repair, they can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Or they can lend a hand with someone else’s repair job. No onsite tools and equipment are required as Repairers bring their own. The only site requirements are tables and chairs, power and lighting, parking, kitchen facilities (if available). The Repair Café will not compete with professional repair specialists.
