In partnership with Volunteering Queensland (RTO #6020), Queensland Secondary Schools, Special Schools and Alternate Training Programs can offer their Year 11 and 12 students the chance to undertake a nationally recognised CHC14015 Certificate I in Active volunteering, CHC24015 Certificate II in Active volunteering, or CHC34015 Certificate III in Active volunteering through the Students As Active Volunteers Initiative (SAAVI).

The impact

Watch SAAVI in action

This video showcases the project work of QASMT (Queensland Academies of Science, Mathematics and Technology) students demonstrating to senior citizens the use of different mobile phone apps at LifeTec's Positive Ageing Conference. The students continued these learning opportunities by providing in-school tutorials for seniors.

In this video students from Caloundra City Private School had an opportunity to learn about the past from those who experienced it first hand with a visit to Seasons Caloundra Aged Care Village at Golden Beach.

The students chatted with residents to learn about their family, childhood, school experiences and just how different life was ‘back in the day’. The program saw students compile a short memoir of a resident’s life, which the resident could present to their family to ensure precious memories are not forgotten.

Getting started with SAAVI

Here's the process for Secondary Schools, Special Schools or Alternate Training Programs to get involved with SAAVI:

  • Contact us to express your interest on 3002 7600 or email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
  • Our SAAVI Coordinator will then contact you to make a time to visit with you to discuss your students’ needs (if this is not possible, then a teleconference will be scheduled).
  • At this meeting all aspects of the SAAVI program will be discussed including any requirements from the secondary school, special school or alternate school including most relevant qualifications, electives and prices. Teacher/trainer requirements will also be clearly outlined at this meeting.
