Ready Reading Volunteer Program

The Ready Reading program aims to improve literacy for children in Queensland through training parents and community members to support children’s reading.

Working in partnership with the Queensland Department of Education., the Ready Reading program will train up to 3,000 mums, dads, carers and members of the community to share their knowledge and time to foster a love of reading in Queensland school classrooms.

Reading is a powerful tool to help children grow their vocabulary, language skills and imagination. It helps children to develop life-long skills that will support their future growth and learning.

As a Ready Reading volunteer, Queenslanders will have the opportunity to make a difference in their local community by supporting children’s reading.

The program will provide training to ensure volunteers are supported in their endeavours to help our students to grow and develop through reading. Ready Reading volunteers will be connected to schools in their local area to participate in their reading programs.

Your commitment

Ready Reading volunteers will undergo training in the support process used with young readers. The training will be delivered by experienced staff from the Department of Education, and you will be guided and supported through your learning.

So the full benefits of the program can be realised, we ask that you commit to undertaking ready reading activities on a regular basis.

Key responsibilities

Work with individual children, under the direction of the class teacher to provide reading support to early readers to assist them in becoming confident and independent in their reading. This will include but is not limited to:

  • literacy and the five essential components for learning to read
  • engaging children in the reading process and modelling the art of reading
  • supporting a child before, during and after they read, through questioning on the illustrations, main ideas in the book, characters, settings and meaning in the story
  • using reading support strategies to develop independent reading skills.

Standard checks

Ready Reading volunteers will undergo standard checks including interview and referee checks

To ensure the safety of all school students, all Ready Reading volunteers will have to undergo a Working with Children Check and receive a blue card before they commence in any school. This process will be fully explained during training, and the process will be initiated during this time, but you can find out more information at bluecard.qld.gov.au/volunteers

Rollout across Queensland

Ready Reading volunteers will work in schools across the State.
