Environment Centres nurture communities that care by delivering a customer experience that builds connection to the environment and drives behaviour change. Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre is seeking outgoing volunteers to create a welcoming, inclusive experience for visitors, pointing out the unique features of the facility and displays while acting as a conduit for the exchange of environmental information. As a volunteer at Karawatha you'll be proactively engaging with visitors, delivering easy ad hoc activities, supporting the day to day running of the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre, leading guided walks of the nearby tracks, or helping support environment centre programs. ### Goals and duties - Make all visitors to Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre feel comfortable and included - Deliver tours of Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre - To provide visitors with basic information about what they can see and do at the site and where facilities are located - Inspire members of the community to take positive action towards protecting Brisbane City Councils nature reserves - Promote upcoming events & activities and facilitate participation with activities - Keeping the centre and facilities tidy and well stocked - Contribute to or compile volunteer program communications - Attend volunteer meetings and training days - Run ad hoc activities such as the interactive touch table and craft - Update Environmental Education displays ### Time Required Volunteers are asked to commit to a 3-hour shift every fortnight for a minimum of 6 months. The below shift are available: - Wednesday mornings 9am-12:00 - Thursday mornings fortnightly 9am-12:30pm - Saturday afternoons fortnightly 12:00 - 3:00pm - Sunday mornings fortnightly 9am-12:30pm - Sunday afternoons fortnightly 12:30 - 4pm ### Skills and requirements - Enjoys starting conversations and meeting new people - Demonstrates excellent communication skills - Enjoy learning and sharing knowledge - Shows initiative and looks for opportunities to engage with visitors - Comfortable talking in front of small groups of people (to deliver small centre tours) - Minimum 18 years of age - BlueCard will be required, we help you obtain this if you do not have one. - Required to be available for and attend an induction morning at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre on Feb 7, 2025 ### Benefits of volunteering at the Environment Centres - Gain valuable community engagement experience - Work within a dynamic team independently and alongside passionate staff and volunteers - Learn about your local reserves (on the job and during one of the many Environment Centre training days) - Personal development opportunities, with the possibility of branching into other Environment Centre volunteer roles. - Join the existing community of volunteers, meeting new people and making connections ### Highly desirable knowledge and experience - Interpretive guide experience - Familiar with local plants and animals - Customer service experience ### Upon acceptance of your application, we will provide the following training: - Group induction morning at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre - On the job training and buddy shifts - ongoing opportunities for personal development ### Optional training opportunities - Ongoing training and personal development will depend on environment centre needs and volunteer demand. - First aid - Flora and Fauna training - Interpretive training ### To apply: Please email the Environment Centre Volunteer Coordinator and let us know the following: - what makes you interested in volunteering at the environment centres. - confirm your shift availability, and if you can commit 6 months from Feb 2026 onwards - and if you can attend the volunteer induction on Feb 7 - confirm you are eligible to apply for a blue card.
