Volunteering Queensland were proud to represent our sector at the Brisbane 2032 Legacy Forum on Wednesday, 22 March. 500 delegates from across Australia – including athletes, community leaders, businesses and youth – came together to shape the legacy for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Our staff met with Olympic Committee members to highlight the importance of supporting volunteering – and that we need to get started today. Volunteering was a key talking point throughout the Legacy Forum:
“What are we doing to plug people into those volunteering roles early? […] Because that drives inclusion, that drives community, that drives health, it all circles back.”
Cate Campbell OAM, Olympic gold medalist
“Volunteering done really well does change everyone’s experience.”
Georgina Richters, Legacy Committee Deputy Chair

“We have the opportunity for generational change through our actions leading into Brisbane and for the decades that follow. We want more athletes striving, more people participating, and more coaches and more volunteers.”
Ian Chesterman, Australian Olympic Committee President

Delegates submitted their ideas for our post-Games legacy. Many key suggestions talked about the need to support volunteers:
- Ensuring volunteering is measured for its economic contribution, just like paid work is measured
- Building a volunteering culture that underpins us socially for the future
Volunteering Queensland will continue to advocate for volunteering to be supported as an essential part of the Games and their legacy.
