The SBS Inclusion Program is a collection of online courses and resources that provide individual self-paced learning in the areas of inclusion and diversity.

The courses reveal real stories, create empathy and make complex information accessible to all, providing practical things people can do on a day-to-day basis.

Volunteering Queensland is pleased to provide free access to some of these courses to volunteer-involving organisations, support them to build inclusion into their volunteering programs.

SBS Core Inclusion Course

The Core Inclusion course is designed to improve your understanding of inclusion and the principles guiding the right conditions for every individual to achieve their full potential. It provides tools to apply your knowledge to promote diversity and help make organisations more inclusive of a range of diverse communities – leading to a fairer, more inclusive society by recognising unconscious bias and discrimination in all its guises.

Time to complete: 1 hour and 45 minutes over 4 modules

Learning Objectives

  • Identify different types of bias
  • Recognise that you have unconscious biases, and that workplace practices and decision making can be negatively affected by unconscious bias and assumptions
  • Recall what constitutes unlawful discrimination and the difference between direct and indirect discrimination
  • Utilise core inclusion skills or ‘people skills’ – such as curiosity and flexibility
  • Incorporate your understanding of diversity and intersectionality into your core inclusion skills
  • Understand inclusive design

 SBS Cultural Diversity Course

The Cultural Diversity course helps organisations and individuals navigate and maximise the benefits of cultural diversity. The course covers areas such as cultural differences and similarities, cross-cultural communication, cultural adaptation, and population trends and their impact in Australia. Individuals doing the course will gain practical skills and culturally specific knowledge for use in the workplace and everyday life.

Time to complete: 2 hours over 5 modules

Learning Objectives

  • Understand that cultures have similarities and differences, especially with relation to direct / indirect communication, the perception of time, and greetings
  • Understand the importance of family across cultures
  • Understand how written, verbal and non-verbal expressions might vary across cultures
  • Understand how environment and object language vary across cultures
  • Identify obstacles to successful cross-cultural communication and measures that can be used to negate differences
  • Define the different stages of cultural adaptation, understand how they may impact a person, and identify measures that facilitate a smooth transition through the stages
  • Understand historical and current migration trends and the impact on the Australian population and in relation to Australian religious diversity
  • Understand historical and current population trends for Indigenous Australians
  • Gain an insight into the changing values of Australia

The Disability course is designed to improve your understanding of disability in all its guises, and to show how employment and volunteering options for people with disability can be improved and embraced.

Time to complete: 2 hours over 4 modules

NEW

The Generational Diversity course is designed to highlight the widespread age-related discriminatory practices that are prevalent today. You will examine assumptions made about older and younger workers, the benefits of having a multi-generational workforce, and how organisations can be more age-inclusive.

Time to complete: 1 hour over 3 modules

  • An awareness of the age demographic changes occurring in society
  • An understanding of the term ‘ageism’ and how it manifests in society
  • An Awareness of age discrimination and its impacts on individuals and organisation
  • Improved knowledge of assumptions people make about older and younger workers
  • An understanding of the impacts gender has on ageism
  • Knowledge of how organisations can effectively manage a multi-generational workforce
  • An appreciation of the benefits gained from having a multi-generational workforce
