During emergencies, we know that Queenslanders are eager to step up and help. Volunteers provide invaluable support to communities and organisations after emergencies.
You can be part of your community’s recovery from an emergency by becoming a spontaneous emergency volunteer with EV CREW. Being a spontaneous emergency volunteer means there is no commitment, you can offer to volunteer when you’re available and interested.
EV CREW stands for Emergency Volunteering Community Response to Extreme Weather. EV CREW is a Volunteering Queensland program designed to bring together volunteers and local community organisations to help communities recover after disasters.
EV CREW is for everyday Queenslanders who want to offer support in their neighbourhood and community. Unlike SES volunteers, you don’t need to have any special skills or undertake rigorous training to join EV CREW. If you’re simply keen to support your neighbours and community recover from a disaster, you can be a spontaneous emergency volunteer.
Since the EV CREW service began in 2008, Volunteering Queensland has connected 46,000 volunteers to over 200 organisations to support with disaster recovery efforts.
Anyone who is keen to help out in their community after a disaster can volunteer with EV CREW. No special skills or training is required.
Anyone over the age of 16
Australian citizen, resident or anyone holding a valid visa
No specific skills required
Blue cards may be required for some activities.
Activities you can expect to be involved in as a spontaneous emergency volunteer with EV CREW include:
Sorting clothing, blankets or goods donations
Gardening, removing branches and debris, helping rebuild fences
Transporting families or delivering food and medicines to families
Assisting with information desks, answering phones, and directing the public
Preparing food for affected families or emergency response teams
Providing care and support for animals affected by disaster
Register for EV CREW by clicking the button to the right and filling out the form. Once registered, you will become part of our statewide pool of volunteers eager to support their community after a disaster.
We will let you know when disaster recovery volunteer opportunities are available in your community and how you can get involved.
If a disaster is approaching your area and significant destruction is expected, emergency services and SES will be the first to respond. It isn’t until after first response occurs, potentially two weeks after the disaster, that we will know if further volunteer support is needed. If further volunteer support is needed and there are volunteer opportunities available in your area, then we will contact you.
You will then be able to view and sign up for volunteer opportunities through the calendar on our disaster volunteer platform.

Emergency Services and SES volunteers are the first to respond to emergencies, including floods, fires and other extreme weather events. They are highly trained for emergency response and have the right equipment to handle dangerous situations.
Once response activities have been completed and affected areas are deemed safe to return to, organisations may then assess the need for community volunteers to assist with recovery activities.
Organisations requiring community volunteers will submit their volunteer opportunities to the disaster volunteer platform. We will contact you if there are emergency volunteer opportunities in your area.
You can view and sign up for the volunteer opportunities in your community that you are available for and interested in on our disaster volunteer platform or through your QVol profile (coming soon)
Once you’ve signed up for an opportunity, you will receive an email confirming your interest in a volunteer shift. Your details will be shared with the organisation running the volunteer opportunity.
It’s almost go time! The organisation running the opportunity may organise an orientation or briefing on the day of your volunteer shift or before to ensure you feel safe, understand your responsibilities, and know who to go to if you need help or have questions.
It’s go time! Please show up at the required time and location for your volunteer shift. If you can no longer attend your volunteer shift, please let the organisation know as early as possible.
