Volunteer Management Essentials

The Volunteer Management Essentials series is designed to give you the essential information needed to run a volunteer program. Sessions are aligned with the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement and take place for up to one hour, online. Topics include:

Planning is essential to delivering effective volunteer services and maximising the impact of volunteering within your organisation. By attending this session, you will be equipped with the skills and insights to effectively plan and manage volunteer initiatives. We will explore how to review roles, identify growth areas, set goals, effectively allocate resources and develop profiles of volunteer teams.

Designing relevant and interesting roles for volunteers which contribute to your organisation’s purpose, goals and objectives will assist you in both recruiting and retaining volunteers, whilst ensuring that you bring on board the right volunteers for the right roles to lead success.

This workshop will cover why it is important to spend time on designing roles, different types of roles to consider, how to build flexibility into roles, and what you should include on a volunteer position description.

Finding volunteers can be a complex and time-consuming process. This workshop investigates commonly used volunteer recruitment methods and explore some methods that you may not have been aware of. It will support you to find the recruitment practices that best support your organisation and allow you to efficiently recruit volunteers.
We will explore planning for recruitment, methods of recruiting volunteers, advertising methods and screening and selection processes.

A new volunteer’s experience during the onboarding process has a large influence on whether they continue in their role. This workshop investigates the different stages of the onboarding process and how to set your volunteer teams up for success from the start of their volunteering journey.
We will explore core components of onboarding, how to develop your onboarding procedure and setting volunteers up for on-going success.

Volunteers contribute a great deal to the organisations they are involved with, so how do you recognise these contributions in a meaningful way? Explore opportunities to recognise the contribution of volunteers in a way that is meaningful to them, from day-to-day recognition through to one-off celebrations and events.

Through this workshop, you will discover methods of recognising volunteers, including those with low or no cost, what motivates volunteers, how to use volunteer motivation to recognise volunteers effectively and how to develop intrinsic motivation amongst volunteers.

Volunteer management requires a unique mix of skills to effectively lead, supervise and develop volunteer teams. By attending this session you will gain insights into effective management and supervision styles while developing key skills to effectively lead volunteers in your organisation. We will explore how to understand and apply supervision/management strategies, use effective communication skills and give and receive effective feedback.

Implementing the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement

The National Standards for Volunteer Involvement provide a framework to deliver best practice in volunteer management. They are adaptable to all sizes of organisation and sector. This workshop gives you the knowledge and tools to successfully implement the standards in your organisation. It covers an overview of the National Standards, benefits and challenges to implementing, gap assessments, action planning and change management for your organisation.

Plus, we’ll share real life examples of how other organisations are effectively implementing the National Standards in their own setting.

Volunteer Leadership Network

The Volunteer Leadership Network brings together like-minded professionals from across the volunteering ecosystem to learn from each other and share opportunities, challenges and insights. Each meeting features knowledgeable guest speakers, examples of best practice volunteer leadership and opportunities for small group discussions.

Meetings take place online every two months, with additional face to face networking opportunities to be added throughout the year.
