It’s August – and for many South East Queenslanders this heralds windy days, the flu, and the Ekka!  As our capital city fills with visitors, the Brisbane showground site is a hive of activity. Exhibitors all over Queensland are putting the finishing touches to their entries/exhibits. Even if you just go for the famous strawberry sundae it’s still a fabulous day out. We love the Ekka, and all the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) events across the state that lead up to it. These events showcase the expertise and innovation across our essential agricultural and regional communities.

Front and centre are the thousands of volunteers that make the Ekka, and all community events, possible. From mucking out animal stalls, hanging artworks, lining up scone tastings, to directing lost patrons and helping kids cuddle chickens – our amazing Queensland volunteers are hard at work before, during, and after the event. Thank you to everyone giving their time to make the Ekka what it is.

My parents volunteered across all aspects of the Royal Toowoomba Show for over 30 years, and I’ve spent many hours alongside them. As with many community events we have a diminishing cohort of long-standing volunteers and a growing need for new people to get engaged. This is an excellent time for all organisations to refresh your volunteer recruitment strategy, and for all volunteers to get out and encourage others to join you. Word of Mouth is still the best way to bring new volunteers into our organisations and events. Spread the word.

National Student Volunteer Week (NSVW) 2024 has been a resounding success, with students across Queensland stepping up to make a meaningful impact in their communities. The enthusiasm and dedication demonstrated by the students have not only benefited those in need but have also highlighted the vital role of young people in driving positive change.

This year’s theme, ‘Generation Impact,’ resonated strongly with participants, inspiring a new wave of student-led initiatives that have the potential to create lasting effects. Volunteering Queensland is proud to have supported this incredible week of action, and we look forward to continuing to empower and celebrate the contributions of young volunteers across the state.

Let’s keep the momentum of NSVW24 going and continue to uplift and empower the future of volunteering!
